Games of Fire by Airicka Phoenix

Book Synopsis:

Sophie has enough problems in her life without Spencer turning her blood to fire, without eyes freezing and burning her, without his hatred of her. Since his migration into the house next to hers, Sophia Valdez isn't sure whether she wants to toss him under a bus or kiss that smirking mouth of his. But even as the temperature rises around them, leaping flames of passion, want and desire, everything either has ever known will be shattered by the lurking shadow hounding their every step, wanting revenge.

Spencer Rowth moves to the sleepy town of River Port with his mother and twelve year old sister, Suzy, to escape a deceitful father, an unfaithful girlfriend and a life crumbling much too fast for him to grapple onto only to be smacked upside the head by the last thing he wanted again. Sophie was everything he refused to want. Her temper, her wit, her laugh, her smile, the way her entire body goes up in flames under his hands are things he would rather slam a lid on and forget. Instead, he finds himself falling for the smart-mouth next door. But how long will he have before the evil chasing them catches up? How long before the very thing he never wanted becomes his only thread to sanity? And who is after them? What do they want and why do they want Spencer and Sophie dead?

Book Review:

Where to start with this review. I felt the book was a pretty decent read. It was written well but something seemed to throw me off on the book. I pretty much knew who the bad guy was a couple chapters in, but really didn't keep me from reading on. There were a few good moments in the book but I just felt there could have been more, I enjoy the last few chapters as that is where most of the action to me occurred.

Maybe I am wrong on this one but it seemed that one minute Sophie was talking about everything and then it went to narrator telling everything. It was a little confusing but it just maybe me and my ability to decipher between both.

I really think that this book should have been from both main character's POV. It would have made the story more interesting, as the synopsis or blurb reads it tells how Spencer struggles with the feelings he has for Sophie and his past. I would have really liked to have seen his thoughts on certain things that were going on in the story.

I really didn't mind reading the book, I thought it was a really nice. A few things needed to be fixed. Very few issues with editing and the author had a good story line built, but just felt like something was missing from the story. After reading the synopsis over again I realized some of the details that was written in there was not really put in the story. There really was not that huge amount of passion to me, or least not enough to say flames were leaping. I felt there was a good amount of sexual tension between the two but compared to other books I have read that did include passion, this book falls short of that.

Sophie drove me crazy with her constant ramblings at different parts of the story, especially when the danger was around. It was to the point I really wanted to slap her. She definitely was a little immature, but what do you expect from 17 year old. I really also didn't think she was a smart mouthed as the synopsis made her out to be. I think her friend Lauren had more of that going on then Sophie did. Don't get me wrong she could throw an attitude towards someone at one point or two in story.

I really liked Spencer, but I would have loved to have a little more detail about him. I think even continue a little on more with their relationship would have been great too. I don't think the book did him justice when it came to describing his issues that he supposedly was dealing with.

Overall, I thought the book was really nice and if you are looking for a simple read then you would enjoy this book!
